Power Incident at UK data center

Dear OSG Sites,

The RAL Tier 1 center in the UK has had a major power incident. Their T1 network and CA services are currently down or recovering.

UK provides 4 Certificate Authorities, all IGTF-accredited and included in current OSG CA bundle. All 4 are affected by this event.

As a result, OSG Site RSV probes checking CRL freshness will start failing. This has no adverse affect on OSG sites since RSV CRL probes are not rated as critical, and it does not affect WLCG sites availability calculations. Site admins are not expected to take any actions.

If the CA services are restored by December 16, OSG sites will experience no adverse affects and site admins are not expected to take any action. If the services cannot be restored by then, we will send you another message describing the actions you need to take. Below we also list the expiration dates for the CRL files from these CAs. As seen, the earliest expiration date is Dec 16.

Currently, the CRL files are set to expire as follows:

UKeScienceCA-2007 nextUpdate=Dec 16 10:41:55 2012 GMT

UKeScienceCA-2A nextUpdate=Dec 19 15:15:01 2012 GMT

UKeScienceCA-2B  nextUpdate=Dec 16 10:41:50 2012 GMT

UKeScienceRoot-2007 nextUpdate=Jan  2 16:35:43 2014 GMT

We do not anticipate further effects on OSG services but are monitoring the situation and will inform you of any developments.

IMPORTANT Update to OSG 3 Resources

OSG Resource Administrators,

The latest OSG 3 update contains a new CA certificates release. If your resource is using the OSG 1.2 release, you can ignore this message.

If you have OSG 3 resources and do not update, RSV monitoring could report errors in as little as 2 days from the update, lowering your WLCG availability.

If you have OSG 3 resources please check this document: https://twiki.grid.iu.edu/bin/view/Documentation/Release3/CaCertUpdate

This document will tell you:

- if an update is necessary

- how to check if you have the latest CA certificates

- the urgency of this update based on your OSG 3 version

- how to update (either your system or the CA certificates only)

Thank you.

OSG Campus Infrastructures Community Workshop at UC Santa Cruz

Dear Colleagues,

We would like to invite you to a workshop on shared campus high throughput computing infrastructures, and engagement of science communities that use them, to be held November 14-15, 2012 at the University of California, Santa Cruz. While we realize this comes at a non-ideal time for many (during SC12), the time and venue correspond to co-located meetings where there is overlap of interested groups and expertise, namely the U.S. ATLAS Distributed Computing Facilities meeting and the U.S. CMS Anydata Anywhere Anytime meeting. A second workshop is planned for March 2013, to be co-located with the OSG All Hands meeting in Indianapolis.

Registration, lodging and travel details, and a preliminary agenda are available at https://indico.fnal.gov/conferenceDisplay.py?confId=5927. While we hope most can attend in person there will be a video service for remote participants.

Best Regards,

Rob Gardner

RSV-SAM is now capable of looking up OIM’s resource aliases as well as URI overrides in service detail to determine which resource group each metric record belongs. This change may require some sites to adjust OIM’s resource alias / URI override in order to ensure continued forwarding of the metrics. GOC will be identifying affected sites during the ITB window.

GOC-TX 1.27

Update will be released on 9/26 to coincide with GGUS SOAP upgrade (except the LVS update).

LVS enabling tx.grid.iu.edu (tx2 will be a standby)

Updating GGUS SOAP interface to use the new consolidated interface

JIRA

Internally, the JIRA server will be renamed to jira.grid.iu.edu rather than jira-osg.grid.iu.edu, but its jira.opensciencegrid.org will not change.

All Services

There will be OS updates; reboots will be required. Downtime should be minimal as the LVS and DNS-round-robin mechanisms will be used to reduce service downtime even further.

This update will see the completion of the transition from the old 129.79.14.* IP addresses to the new 129.79.53.* IP addresses with the removal of the logical network adapters that were listening on the old addresses. The old IP addresses will then be retired.

OSG PKI Training registration now available for RAs, Grid Admins

Dear prospective OSG PKI Registration Agents and Grid Admins,

The new OSG PKI that will go into operation in October, while being very similar to the DOE Grids PKI, will have changes to its interface and workflows. Hence the transition team is offering training to Registration Agents and Grid Admins.

Training sessions will be available via webcast and will involve hands-on approval of certificates via the OSG test PKI. Times and URLs for registration are below.

** Please register at least a week in advance so that we can grant you access to the training system. **

Note that one change is how responsibilities are divided between Grid Admins and Registration Agents. In the new OSG PKI, Registration Agents will be solely responsible for certificates for people, while Grid Admins will be responsible solely for host and service certificates. We expect some individuals will be both Registration Agents and Grid Admins.

If you have any questions, please feel feel to contain Von Welch (vwelch@indiana.edu), OSG PKI Transition Project Lead, Mine Altunay (maltunay@fnal.gov) or Jim Basney (jbasney@illinois.edu), OSG PKI Training Leads.

Thank you,

Von

Special Maintenance window for GOC Production Glidein Factory - Tuesday, September 18, 2012 17:00 UTC

Operators will perform maintenance on the GOC Glidein Factory beginning Tuesday, September 18, 2012 from 17:00 - 18:00 UTC.

It has been discovered the factory will not work with any frontends that have already upgraded to GlideinWMS v2_6_1 until we also upgrade the factory to v2_6_1.

The upgrade will be quick and the factory should not be down for more than 20 minutes. It will not adversely affect any currently running glideins in any way and UCSD will continue to serve the frontends as usual while the GOC Factory is down.

DOE Grids service transition

Dear colleagues,

As we have been communicating with you over the past several months, ESnet will be fully transitioning support for the DOE Grids certificate service to a new service operated by the Open Science Grid (OSG).

We have reached a critical juncture in the transition where it is necessary for you to begin solidifying your organization’s future certificate service plans to ensure no interruption of service. We encourage you to read the following information carefully.

In mid-March 2013 the DOE Grids PKI will cease issuing new certificates. The exact timing will coincide with the planned Large Hadron Collider (LHC) shutdown. The exact date of the shutdown is still being determined and we will share that specific date as soon as it is set. After DOE Grids concludes offering certificate services, all users will either need to use the OSG certificate service (the “OSG PKI”), or some other provider, to obtain or renew certificates. All certificates issued by DOE Grids prior to its cessation of service in mid-March 2013 will continue to function for 12 months after the date of issue.

To help ensure a seamless transition of service, beginning October 1, 2012, the OSG PKI will begin issuing production-ready certificates. This will allow you time to transition to the new service and resolve any issues that may arise before the DOE Grids service ends. The new OSG PKI will have a new look and feel, but effort has been made to keep the workflow and processes similar to the DOE Grids PKI. There is friendly testing already underway. If you would like to participate in this current trial, please contact Von Welch at vwelch@indiana.edu.

Your organization should begin planning for the effort involved in the transition. Specifically, please note the following action items that will need to be taken:

* Registration Authorities (RAs) and Grid Admins will need to register with the OSG PKI. This will involve making a formal request for the service and accepting the OSG/DigiCert agreement. A draft process can be found here: https://twiki.grid.iu.edu/bin/view/Operations/OSGPKITrustedAgent

* In the new OSG PKI, the role of the Grid Admin will change. Virtual Organization (VO) RAs will approve users in their VO and Grid Admins will approve hosts in a given domain (e.g., iu.edu).

* In the new service, users identities (distinguished names) will change. VOs will need to prepare for the extra effort for handling this change. For example, VOs will need to be prepared to re-register users in the Virtual Organization Management System (VOMS) or other access control mechanisms, if applicable.

* The DigiCert CA used by the new OSG PKI is in the IGTF CA distribution starting with the January 2012 v1.44 distribution. VOs and Sites should ensure they update as soon as possible. Please see: https://dist.eugridpma.info/distribution/igtf/current/accredited/

* Beginning in October 2012, training and other resources will be available to help organizations prepare for the service transition. We will be sending an update to this mail list when training is scheduled or otherwise available. Please contact Von (vwelch@indiana.edu) if you have interest in participating in this training so we can plan appropriate venues and delivery mechanisms. For more information, visit: https://opensciencegrid.org/bin/view/Security/DigiCertTrainingPlan

Von is also currently hosting weekly calls on Tuesdays at 3pm ET focused on details of the transition. All are invited to join these calls to discuss your needs and to learn the progress of the roll-out. Call-in details can be found below and on the OSG PKI Planning Website, which provides up to date information on all aspects of the transition.

Ruth Pordes (ruth@fnal.gov) and Von (vwelch@indiana.edu) together with our ESnet staff are available at anytime for individual conversations about the service to answer any questions you may have. We will be contacting each of you in the coming weeks to schedule a one-on-one conversation to answer questions and ensure your transition planning is underway. We look forward to speaking with you soon.

Regards,

Von Welch

The Large Synoptic Survey Telescope (LSST) Needs Your Opportunistic Cycles

OSG Resource Providers,

The LSST VO (http://www.lsst.org/lsst/) is looking for cycles. LSST is currently running on OSG resources using the North West Indiana Campus Grid (NWICG) VO as an umbrella VO for their activities. Eventually, we would like for all of the LSST work to be accounted to the LSST VO. Please take a look to see if your resource is enabled to allow LSST VO jobs, and if it is not please consider enabling it. Below is a description of the application. LSST jobs run already on the OSG and the LSST simulation group can work closely with the OSG support group and the resource providers in case of need. If you'd like to help please enable the LSST VO: we are happy to provide assistance if help is needed.

Thank you in advance for your participation,

Rob Quick

OSG Operations Coordinator

Gabriele Garzoglio

OSG Support team

John Peterson

LSST Photon Simulator Coordinator

About LSST simulations

-----------

The Large Synoptic Survey Telescope (LSST) will image a large area of the sky with each exposure. This will help it in accomplishing its science missions:

1.Probing dark energy and dark matter

2.Taking an inventory of the solar system

3.Exploring the transient optical sky

4.Mapping the Milky Way

One of the main features of the telescope is a 3.2 Gigapixel camera, which is anticipated to produce about 15TB of uncompressed image data a night. Another is its large mirror, which allows the telescope to quickly detect faint objects in a large area of the sky.

The OSG user support team and the LSST simulation group have collaborated in 2010 to port the LSST image simulation application to the OSG. Today, LSST simulation jobs "overspill" to OSG from Purdue whenever additional cycles are needed. Simulated images are used to refine and validate the data analysis software used to accomplish LSST scientific missions. For one exposure the software simulates the path of 1011 photons from their sources, through the atmosphere, the telescope optics, and to the CCDs.

LSST Simulation Execution on the OSG

--------------------------

The client supports following important features:

* integration with glideinWMS

* automatic recovery of jobs through glideinWMS

* full support for eviction of jobs, automatic suspend and restart of the job

* ~30 MB data stage in / stage out per job without a need to prestage data at sites

* 1-5 hours per job

* the "unit" of computation is a "visit" of the sky i.e. two 15 sec exposures of all 189 camera CCDs i.e. 378 jobs. This takes ~1000 CPU hours.

Benefits of running LSST Simulation on your Site

--------------------------------------

LSST simulation runs approximately monthly "bursts" of job "overspilling" from Purdue to OSG and other resources. These jobs will utilize idles cycles at your site that might otherwise not be utilized. At the same time, through the integration with GlideinWMS, the jobs will not flood any one site.

Two servers previously hosting retired services will be removed from the production rack and moved to the ITB rack for re-purposing.

IP Changes

UPDATE: DOEGrids Certificate Service Problems

There are no problems with requesting new service and user certificates to the DOEgrids web interface.

The gridadmins who need new service certs: use the cert-request script to generate a new request. This works fine. Later the gridadmin or an RA Agent can log into the DOEGrids web interface and approve the request via the browser interface (https://pki1.doegrids.org:8100/).

For user certificates: request a new certificate for the end user. Fill out the form at https://software.grid.iu.edu/cert/certreg.php. Make sure to fill out the "Expired Certificate (Keeping your Old DN) (Optional) " field. You should put your existing DN in this field so that you can still get the same certificate. This will make sure VOMS registration and other registrations will work without a hitch.

We will continue to debug what is wrong with renewal interfaces.

DocDB upgrade Wednesday, March 21, 7 a.m. - 8 a.m. (CDT - Chicago)

All times following are CDT (Chicago).

From Fermilab's Service Desk:

============================================

Hello,

On Wednesday, March 21 beginning at approximately 7:15 a.m. staff members will upgrade DocDB to the latest version, r8.7.16. You will be able to read documents during this time, however, we recommend you do not administer DocDB or update or create new documents, as you might experience some odd behavior.

Once the DocDB upgrade is complete, we will patch and reboot the computer that hosts DocDB. This part of the upgrade will begin at approximately 7:40 a.m. and will include an outage expected to last between five and ten minutes.

DocDB r8.7.16 changes include:

1. Corrects some of the issues introduced to fix cross-site scripting vulnerabilities in the current version that cause special characters such as "&" to display incorrectly.

2. Increases the length of the "related documents" field to 2048 characters long. This should allow you to enter several hundred related documents.

3. Fixes an incompatibility between the operating system and the zip command that prevented the download of document files into a zip archive.

All Hosts — OS Updates

We will be installing updated packages from the OS provider on all physical and virtual hosts, including updates to the kernel. There will be downtime during the day for most services, but in most cases it should not be more than 15 minutes. In the case of the CEMon-BDII aggregator service, we will use the DNS round-robin to shift traffic away from the server undergoing maintenance, so no downtime is required, but there may be some degradation of service during this time.

Ticket Exchange Attachment Interface Unavailable

OSG Operations has discovered a problem with file attachments to tickets originating at GGUS. This problem was introduced during a recent update to the GGUS ticketing system which caused an inability to access the SOAP attachment interface. Support tickets have been opened at (https://ticket.grid.iu.edu/goc/11560 and https://ggus.eu/ws/ticket_info.php?ticket=78844) and direct communication with GGUS developers has been initiated. This only affects file attachments to tickets, all other ticket exchange functionality is normal.
